Course Objectives

This course teaches how to effectively and confidently use TWSzOS (Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS which is IBM/Tivoli’s strategic product for scheduling and managing the enterprise’s workload. It introduces the product and shows how to model the data centre in TWSzOS databases, schedule work in its Long Term Plan and manage work in the Current Plan. Advanced techniques including Special Resources, OPSTAT, SRSTAT, Event Triggered Tracking, Automatic Recovery, Restart & Cleanup and JCL Automation are covered. The course is suitable for users of all versions of TWSzOS. Participants receive a detailed course notebook. Practical sessions using a live system take up to 50% of course time. No previous product knowledge is required. On successful completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • use TWSzOS with confidence
  • work with all TWSzOS databases
  • schedule work
  • manage work using TWSzOS dialog panels
  • correct & rerun failed jobs
  • state the meaning of TWSzOS statuses
  • use OPSTAT, SRSTAT and ETT
  • code Automatic Recovery statements
  • use Restart & Cleanup functions
  • define and use TWSzOS variables.

Course Content

TWSzOS overview
What TWSzOS is, what it does and how it does it.
This segment describes TWSzOS, its components and how they work together. It also discusses its link to TWS for distributed & End-to-End Scheduling.

TWSzOS databases 1
Calendar, Period and Workstation
Describes these databases and use in scheduling work and logically representing the data centre. Followed by laboratory session.

TWSzOS databases 2
Application & Job Description.
How to define work in the Application and Job Description databases. Followed by laboratory session

TWSzOS planning 1
Long Term Plan.
A new Long Term Plan is created so attendees can check and correct their scheduling instructions defined in previous laboratories. Includes laboratory.

TWSzOS planning 2
Current Plan.
A new current plan is created; applications created and scheduled in previous laboratories start running and attendees observe and manage the jobs. And correct and rerun any that may fail. Includes laboratory

TWSzOS statuses
Occurrence and operation statuses.
A full understanding of TWSzOS statuses is essential to properly manage TWSzOS work. This topic explains what they really mean. Includes a quiz.

TWSzOS planning 3
Long Term Plan and Current Plan.
Describes the how Long Term & Current Plan interact, how Long Term Plan calculates dependencies and what input arrival and deadline time really mean.

Special resources
Special Resource Database and Monitor.
Special Resources (SR) represent real resources and controlling their availability gives extra flexibility when managing work. We cover defining SR in the database and how to manage them through the SR Monitor. Followed by laboratory session

Unplanned work
OPSTAT, SRSTAT and ETT.
This segment describes how TWSzOS work can be controlled from outside TWSzOS by changing the status of work stations or special resources, and how to add non-scheduled applications into the Current Plan. Followed by laboratory session

Automatic Recovery
Automatic Recovery statements.
Automatic Recovery (AR) will attempt to correct and rerun failed jobs. This topic explains how to code and use AR statements. Followed by laboratory session

Restart & Cleanup
Catalog management and step-level restarts.
Restart & Cleanup attempts to reset datasets ready for a job rerun and can be combined with a step level restart. This topic covers the dialog panels that manage this function. Followed by laboratory session.

JCL automation
JCL directives, variable database and variables.
Creating & using TWSzOS variables and coding JCL Directives to manage JCL are explained. Followed by laboratory session.
